SourceSafe Data Tree

ByDave Goodall

*A SourceSafe 'database' is a plain file tree and not a Codd style relational database.
*To spread the files out evenly, a take-a-next-letter-for-better service round-robin scheme is managed by the aaaaaaaa.cnt file. Each new file is added to the next letter directory. For example files 1-26 are placed successively into a-z, and then we start at a again.
*Each logical file or project is backed by two files in SourceSafe: a 'Log' and 'Data' file.
*The um.dat control file contains the names of the users of the system.
*The names.dat control file contains project and file name strings.
