PPM Tool Evolution PPM solutions have classically been oriented to supporting line managers with tools for scheduling, resource, and timesheet management. Newer tools have focussed on supporting project team members with a rich array of collaboration functions : instant status updates, the ability to attach the wild variety of documentation generated around the project, and posting of current hot issues. Depending on each organization's maturity, scale, budget, and the tools they already have in house the process can start with solutions built around popular email, spreadsheets or collaboration packages, and move up through collaboration tools designed from the outset with ppm in mind to custom project and portfolio (PPM) packages, and finally to full blown enterprise project and portfolio management (EPPM) systems. Moving up the food chain is a lot easier and less risky and costly if hosting the package and more importantly keeping it updated to the latest version can be out-sourced. On-premise installation support usually means expensive inhouse resource head-count. As a result Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions have become increasingly important. No less than 20% of the packages we examined to date were either pure Saas or Saas with an option to bring it on-premise, and another 25% of vendors had moved to add SaaS capability |
